From physical to digital licensing, a journey of a thousand steps that begins with modern Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM). For State and Local governments considering digital licensing, we recommend you review our in-depth conversation between the California Department of Motor Vehicles and Okta.
Mobile driver's licenses, or mDLs, are becoming a hot topic nationwide as States explore how to implement them securely. This presents new opportunities and challenges for State motor vehicle departments and industry partners looking to provide residents with the right tools to provide a seamless, secure, and efficient user experience.
In a recent conversation hosted by Scoop News, Ajay Gupta, the Chief Digital Transformation Officer at the California Department of Motor Vehicles, and Christine Halverson, Okta’s Public Sector CTO, discussed the delicate partnership needed between the public and private sectors to properly implement and develop the necessary technology to make this form of identification a reality for residents.
Ajay Gupta emphasized the importance of agility in properly managing Real IDs and mDL for the densest state in the US. “[California] is really the largest DMV in the nation, [in comparison] we'd be the most significant customer-facing public sector entity servicing over 34 million identity cards and driver licenses issues with unique needs.”
“We do 60 million transactions a year. And we gather 14 billion dollars in revenue. So we are pretty big,” continued Ajay. “We have over 220 locations, physical locations. All throughout California. We service our customers through those physical locations and through our online sites, through our over 200 kiosks.”
